Presented by:

Get into gardening this summer with our Sunflower Growing Contest! Participants will need to utilize the Mammoth Grey Stripe strain (available from Renegade Acres/Garden Hoard) for the contest, but all sunflowers are encouraged to beautify homes and businesses throughout Howell. We will hand out FREE seed packets at the Howell Farmer's Market on May 23rd from 9am-2pm.
Competition Rules:
Only one prize awarded per residence.
First day of the competition is May 23 – plant your seeds this day at the earliest.
Must use Mammoth Grey Stripe variety – available through Garden Hoard
There will be 3 age categories – 0-12 yrs, 13-49 yrs, 50+ yrs. The winners of the adult/senior groups will receive a year long membership to the Oceola Community Center and the winner of the kids group will receive a Fall Special Event package with 2 tickets to the Family Melon Ball, Legend of Sleepy Howell, and Light up Howell events.
Weather depending, we are looking to have “measurement day” in early to mid August. You will need to snap a photo of the gardener with their sunflower and some sort of measuring tape/stick indicating height. Photos will be submitted on this page at that time. Updates on the program will be posted online and in the Facebook group ‘Howell Grown Sunflower Project.’
Non-competitive participants:
Have fun! Use whatever sunflower seeds you like and post photos of your progress on the ‘Howell Grown Sunflower Project’ Facebook group. We can’t wait to see your gorgeous flowers!
